How do I delete or burn my NFTs?
When you mint an NFT on Mintable, it becomes a part of the blockchain. This means that even though the NFT is tied to digital assets like images, videos, or other media, the NFT itself is a permanent entry on the blockchain.
What Happens When You Burn an NFT?
Burning an NFT removes it from your wallet and effectively makes it inaccessible or unusable by sending it to a "burn address," a special, unspendable address on the blockchain. However, this does not erase the record of the NFT from the blockchain.
Here’s what remains after burning:
The blockchain record: The minting data, ownership history, and any other blockchain transactions related to the NFT remain forever visible and accessible on the blockchain (e.g., through explorers like Etherscan).
The digital asset: The media file associated with the NFT (image, video, etc.) is often stored on decentralized storage solutions (e.g., IPFS). Even if the NFT is burned, the underlying media may still be accessible via its link or hash.
Why Can't Images or Metadata Be Removed?
The blockchain is a decentralized and immutable ledger, meaning once data is recorded, it cannot be deleted or altered.
Media files linked to NFTs are typically stored using decentralized services, so even if the NFT is no longer owned by anyone (i.e., burned), the media itself can still be accessed.
The Ethereum address: 0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD is essentially a black hole for lots of NFTs and currencies.
Burning an NFT on Mintable
Burning an NFT permanently removes it from circulation. Follow these steps to burn an NFT on Mintable. Please ntoe
Step 1: Connect Your Wallet
Open Mintable and log in to your account.
Connect your wallet if it’s not already connected.
Step 2: Access the NFT You Want to Burn
Go to your profile and find the NFT you wish to burn in your collection.
Hover on the NFT and find the "Transfer" option.
Step 3: Initiate the Burn Process
Click the "Transfer" button located in the NFT options. Paste 0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD as the receiving address.
You will be shown a warning indicating that burning is permanent and irreversible. Be sure you want to burn the NFT before proceeding.
Step 4: Confirm and Pay Gas Fees
After confirming you want to burn the NFT, your wallet will prompt you to approve the gas fee payment.
Do not edit the estimated gas fee as insufficient can cause the transaction to fail. Gas consumed for failed transactions is not recoverable/refundable by Mintable.
Gas fees must be paid in ETH. Once you approve and the transaction is completed, the NFT will be sent to a burn address and permanently removed from circulation.
You can verify the burn on Etherscan, as the NFT will no longer appear in your collection.
Artists / Minters should only send NFTs to the burn address when they really want to guarantee to the community the verifiable scarcity that there's only a certain number of NFTs in circulation. Gas is required for such transaction.
